MARCUS AURELIUS ANTONINUS THE ROMAN EMPEROR

This is the beginning of the so called Meditations by the Philosopher/Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Aurelius was a unique blend of stoic virtue and military prowess. One of the last effective emperors during the declining days of the empire, he devoted much of his energies to holding back the barbarians, yet still found time to write a book on the correct mode of living and understanding one's place in the world.
